Fighting Poverty and Supporting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
Over a billion people in our world live on less than two dollars a day. This is an injustice that violates the rights and dignity of human beings. Poverty is not merely an economic condition but is a complex phenomenon involving multiple factors. Poverty is both a personal problem and a structural problem. The poor are excluded at so many levels, often denied rights, victimized by the abuse of power and socially marginalized. It is against such odds that the poor of our world continue to battle to survive and live meaningful lives.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the eight goals agreed by the 192 heads of states of the United Nations at the Millennium Summit in 2000 to eradicate the world of extreme poverty and hunger by 2015.
CIJR works in partnership with other NGOs as advocates for the rights of the poor and to rid the world of poverty. We believe that poverty is a social sin, an affront against the character of God.
In February 2008, a CIJR delegation attended the 46th session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development (CSD). The theme for the session was “Promoting Full Employment and Decent Work for All”.
